From Wazza:
2020 was a very different and sad year with no metropolitan football, no local senior football and only a hand full of junior grade football games played. But it is great to see everyone back training, the kids smiling, coaches coaching and volunteers working hard as always.

But the most important thing is that the wrap is back for 2021. Excited to be able to once more give you the wrap up on all of our competitive matches over each weekend. ????

One great change in 2021 is that we have entered a women’s team into the state league competition. Coached by the very experienced Adam Vranesic these girls have got the goods to take on the best. We entered the girls into the NIKE FC Cup, a pre season competition for women’s teams. They played their qualifying match last Sunday the 14th and beat Melton Phoenix 15-0.

For their round 1 clash Sunday they travelled to Kevin Bartlett Reserve in Richmond to take on Collingwood City FC. The conditions were wet but our ladies were awesome. Tina Benoit, Alyson Pym and Jessica Sheehan all found the back of the net in the first half giving us a 3-0 lead at half time. The second half was a step up with Tina scoring again, Alyson scoring two more for a hat trick and we welcome back to our Club Tayte Fraser who scored two goals in the second half. Final Score a big 8-0 win to BSC. Quick shout out to Kirsten Rush for keeping 2 clean sheets in a row.
We await Mondays draw now to see who the ladies face next week in the second round.

Our state league men started their season off on Saturday taking on Balmoral FC on the synthetic at Morshead.
First up was the reserves. In the 18th minute the visitors attacked strongly and a kick bounced off our keepers legs, headed back to the top of the box where a Balmoral forward kicked it back into the net. But we equalized 9 minutes later with some midfield magic giving Aaron Cartledge a goal. Scores were locked at 1-1 at half time.
Second half was all BSC. in the 57th minute Tom Dance headed a beauty in for a goal and to finish off Alex Pituch scored our third in the 75th. 3-1 win.

Our seniors then took to the pitch under the lights for the main event. Everyone was pumped after missing so much football. A large BSC crowd were there to watch and support. The warm up done, the players on the pitch, the whistle blew, game was on. From end to end it went, our boys not quite fully switched on as opportunities were missed, close but not close enough for both teams. At the end of the first half it was a 0-0 score line.

Some motivational talking from the leadership group and also from coach Tony at half time saw a different side come out and 1 minute into the second half Liam Haintz scored a ripper goal to give us the lead. Then it was a game of defend the lead, which we did but the football gods were not going to allow us an easy victory because in the 79th minute Balmoral scored a lucky goal to level up the scores. We had plenty of chances to score again in the last 15 minutes but some miss kicks went astray and we just couldn’t find the goals.
Round one BSC 1 – Balmoral FC 1.

The positive thing from it is that in 2019 Balmoral finished second on the ladder after winning their last 16 games in a row. That says to me that we have a very good squad.

Until next week,
Stay safe,
Wazza.
